Each year 170 expert judges taste more than 15,000 wines from more than 56 countries. To be evaluated, the wines are divided by category so as to get a fitting judgment.
The judges, divided by committee, conduct an individual blind tasting, assigning the bottle a score expressed in hundredths.
For example: the Pignolo committee, consisting only of experienced judges in the category, meets and tastes bottles of which it knows only provenance, color, varietal, style, year and price range.
Each individual judge casts a vote, after which the regional presidents clarify any inconsistencies between the scores awarded and repeat the tastings of all silver and gold medal winners.
Each medal corresponds to a score range:
- BRONZE→ 86-89
- SILVER → 90-94
- GOLD →95-96
At this point we move on to the second step of the award ceremony: all gold medals are tasted, the most deserving will enter the PLATINUM category, and they will be given a score from 97 to 100.
Those who received the platinum medal will compete for the last step, at the end of which the "Best In Show" will be selected.
As anticipated, this competition allows everyone to be able to rise to the top: from white wines to red wines, from fortified wines to passito wines.
